Can you believe it someone tried to scam us today!!?!?!
I had a really long day at work. My boss was not feeling well. I have a lovely sinus infection. So I was not up to par either. I was getting in the car when Mark called to tell me that someone called about our past due gas bill. Huh? Now I know I am tired, but I am pretty sure that I just got the heat bill. I told him I would deal with it when I got home. Then I started thinking maybe it was a scam, or maybe it was like the hospital bill. (I went to the hospital on January 4th for pneumonia. I got the bill and 4 days later they called to see how and when I was planning to pay the bill! WTH??! I just got the stupid thing and already they want money. I just paid them for my surgery last month! Now they want even more and only give me 4 days!)
Anyway, the call turned out to be a scam. Basically they told Mark that we had a past due bill (for a much smaller amount than what we would normally pay this time of year) that needed to be paid to keep the gas/heat on. And, the only way we could pay it was to give them a credit card right away. He smartly told them they would have to talk to me as I was the one that paid the bills. He told them to call back in an hour when I would be home.
Can you believe it that actually called back!! They must be really desperate. So when I got home I looked up our account number, called for our balance (we just got the bill 4 days ago) and called them back. They wanted to know my husband's middle name. I told them that was not happening, and that they needed to tell me the account number they were calling about. They were good enough to know the first 3 digits of the gas bill accounts. But, of course, the rest of it was all wrong. When I told them that, they hung up on me. I wish I could get a telemarketer to do that sometimes!
I then called the gas company and told them about it. They instructed me to call the police and the Public Utilities Commission. They also told me that all utilities have an automated call system, if you are late, that instructs you to call them. So, just before dinner I made a police report and I will call the PUC in the morning. I just hope that it may have scared them off enough to make them not call the next person. Can you just imagine if they got some little old lady worried about freezing in this cold and she gave them her info?!!? It's too scary to imagine the damage that they could do.
Several things tipped us off. 1) They called us asking for a credit card number. 2) The bill amount was way low. 3) I keep track of when the bills are due. I have been paying them for 15 years so I know what bills are due and when. 4) They called back and left a 1-866 number. 5) They wanted us to give them more information. If they were legit they would have had all the info they needed. 6) When I called them, the name of the business was not clearly pronounced, the person I talked to could not be clearly understood and the background noise sounded like I was calling someone's house.
FYI: The police told us that if it ever happened again to ask the con artist to send us something in writing showing the amount due, account number, etc. That way they would have a paper trail to follow. Obviously they also told us to never give out information over the phone because these days you just never know who you are dealing with. Scary world we live in, isn't it?!?!
